Nursery join Argyle House Reception for a trip to Butterfly World

Children from Little Crickets Nursery recently joined reception for a memorable trip to Butterfly World in Stockton on Tees.

Butterfly World is home to one of the largest collections of butterfly host plants in Europe and is capable of breeding some of the rarest butterflies. Their efforts help protect butterfly populations and support global biodiversity.

School visits to Butterfly World are all about hands-on learning that supports key areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum such as Understanding the World. The day began with a session on the life cycle of a butterfly. This helped the children make meaningful connections between classroom learning and the natural environment as children had previously been exploring the topic of minibeasts and reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar at Nursery.

This was followed by a visit to the tropical atrium, where pupils were able to observe a wide variety of butterflies up close. Pupils also had the unique opportunity to carefully hold caterpillars and butterflies. To their delight, some butterflies even chose to land on them! The atrium offered even more to explore, with fish, lizards, marmosets and meerkats capturing the children’s fascination.

After a well-earned lunch, the day continued with outdoor activities in the park. Pupils enjoyed completing a nature-themed scavenger hunt and drawing pictures inspired by their favourite parts of the trip. Spending time with children and teachers from Reception gave the nursery children a taste of what they can expect from their transition to school in the future.

The children returned to Nursery with a wealth of new knowledge and excitement about the natural world.
